As you may know by now, cannabis means a lot more than just getting high on marijuana with THC. So, when you think of celebrities and cannabis, it is a lot more than Snoop Dogg surrounded by billowing clouds of smoke or Willie Nelson singing “Roll Me Up”.
After the legalization of products derived from hemp by the signing of 2018 Farm Bill in late December, the compelling effectiveness of hemp cannabidiol (CBD) products continues to grow in recognition by people looking to fight chronic issues like anxiety, sleep insomnia, chronic pain, and more. This includes an explosion of CBD into the lifestyles of popular culture and sports.
Celebrities and athletes are part of the growing number of people turning to this powerful cannabinoid for medicinal purposes. Usually the first ones to try new wellness “trends”, it is no surprise that some of the top A-listers are the biggest proponents of CBD in all kinds of forms. From traditional tinctures and oils to beauty products infused with CBD. Some have even added large endorsements of CBD brands and products to their repertoire.
Let’s take a look at some of the well-known celebrities and athletes whose lives have been greatly impacted by the positive effects of CBD.
Critically acclaimed actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks is a major advocate for and user of CBD to battle his long-time anxiety as well as his Type II Diabetes that he was diagnosed with at the age of 59. He credits cannabidiol with greatly helping him with his acting career.
In fact, over the last several years, Tom Hanks has made it his personal mission to find a solution for diabetes and has teamed up with Cornell University to study how CBD can help those with Type 2 Diabetes and stress-related illnesses. He wantseveryone to know the benefits of this plant-based super product as a medicine.
Hanks was quoted as saying: “The first time I ever tried CBD was to help soothe my anxiety. I was fed up with taking various pills to try and make me ‘better’... It wasn't how I wanted to live my life anymore. So I gave CBD oil a try. It was a huge relief for me to feel like myself, yet the edge was gone. A bonus to the whole thing was the relief from various aches and pains I have. Especially the arthritis in my knees. It immediately alleviated 90% of my pain. The benefits of CBD oil are unlike anything any pill or medication can do.”
Talk show host, actress, comedian, and performer Whoopi Goldberg is now recognized as one of the most active celebrity cannabis and CBD advocates. One of Goldberg’s current goals is to show the world exactly how effective CBD can be for middle-aged women.
Common women’s health issues such as menstrual cramps, menopausal discomfort,Dysmenorrhea (extremely painful periods),and nerve pain are issues that millions of women face daily and Goldberg wants everyone to have easy access to CBD-based products to help combat these. So, she took action and in 2016 co-founded the female-oriented brand of cannabis products Whoopi & Maya, which are available mostly in Colorado and California. One of the company’s main goals is the production of CBD products specifically for relief from period pain.
Whoopi openly talks about often using CBD and THC herself to combat several issues. She uses a CBD vape pen to help combat symptoms of stress, chronic pain, glaucoma, and menstrual cramps. Goldberg was quoted talking about CBD: "Every new market we are able to expand into is a victory for women looking for relief from pain and menstrual discomfort."..."I used to be under the table with my cramps, and my daughter and granddaughters are the same way. With all these different [CBD] products, there wasn't something for women. That says a lot about us as a nation. People don't think about menstrual cramps as something that's real." Well, now she has an answer for women everywhere.
With an increase in the variety and abundance of hemp-based CBD products on the market, containing little to none of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, it is no surprise that athletes are starting to back CBD and its benefits with a vengeance.
One of those athletes is MMA superstar Nate Diaz. Not afraid of being an outspoken advocate for CBD, in 2016 Nate Diaz did something no one had seen before in the world of UFC or the sports industry in general: he openly vaped CBD oil during his live TV post-fight interviewafter a ferocious fight with Connor McGregor. Diaz proclaimed that regular use of CBD helps him to quickly recover from his fight injuries, significantly reduces inflammation, and alleviate pain. He is now a major advocate for CBD vapes and when asked exactly how he recovers from fights: "It's CBD. It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It'll make your life a better place.”
Amy Van Dyken is a world-renowned six-time Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer from Denver, CO. After retiring from swimming in 2000, she tragically suffered an ATV accident in 2014, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Van Dyken gives all the credit to CBD from hemp for allowing her to manage tremendous neuropathic pain and live a manageable life. In an interview with cannabis culture blog Civilized in August 2018, she was quoted: “I cannot live without it, and I will not live without it.”
In 2018, Van Dyken partnered with Kannaway, a hemp lifestyle network, to advocate for Kannaway’s CBD products that have drastically improved her quality of life: “I hope my story can help spread awareness of the benefits of CBD so that people like me can feel more comfortable giving it a try.”
Acclaimed producer, director, actress, model, and activist Olivia Wilde is a huge proponent of Hemp Oil CBD. In 2018, Wilde talked openly in an interview with the New York Times about her love of Lord Jones CBD lotion, which is quickly growing in popularity among female A-List celebrities (including Mandy Moore as well) who are often wearing high heels.
Like many CBD users, she finds relief from body aches and tensed-up muscles by using cannabidiol-infused body lotions instead or resorting to over-the-counter pain medications that can wreak havoc on our bodies over the long term. She proclaimed:"Recently I did a play on Broadway for six months. My body was wrecked, [and] my neck was really tight. The CBD has relaxing benefits, and the idea is to avoid using too many painkillers."
Canadian actor and comedian Seth Rogan is known for his hilarious movies and comedy shows but now you can add strict CBD advocate to his resume. His lobbying on CBD usage, specifically concerning Alzheimer’s disease has even brought him to the floor of Congress to challenge leaders on CBD law in 2014.
Rogen still remains an active advocate of CBD law being fully updated for medicinal purposes. He is also one of the most high-profile members of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Rogen, alongside his wife, founded the non-profit Hilarity for Charity which researches treatments and care for Alzheimer’s disease sufferers, specifically through the use of CBD oil and related products as a treatment management tool.
There are now dozens and dozens of celebrities and athletes who are actively using CBD to help combat common ailments like anxiety, depression, joint and muscle pain, and even diseases like MS. With their celebrity status, reach, and influence, many are branching out into CBD and cannabis activism and partnering with or creating new brands to help bring more answers to the market.
The continued emerging evidence of the positive effects of CBD is a sign of a very exciting time in our world, even outside the realm of pop culture and sports. As it becomes even more and more widely accepted, everyone from A-list celebrities to the soccer-mom next store will be raving about CBD.
